What is an MRI quench vent system?

An MRI quench vent system is a dedicated exhaust system designed to safely discharge helium gas outside a building during a magnet quench. The system directs rapidly expanding helium away from the MRI suite, helping protect patients, staff, equipment, and the facility.

What is an MRI quench?

A quench occurs when an MRI magnet loses its superconducting state, causing the liquid helium inside the magnet to rapidly boil into gas. Because helium expands dramatically as it changes from liquid to gas, it must be safely vented outside through a properly engineered quench vent system.

Why is a quench vent important?

Without a properly functioning quench vent system, helium gas can enter the MRI room, displacing oxygen and creating a serious safety hazard. A correctly designed vent system also helps protect the MRI equipment from excessive pressure during a quench event.

What is a bellows expansion joint?

A bellows expansion joint is a flexible stainless steel component that absorbs thermal movement, vibration, and installation tolerances within the quench vent system. Bellows help reduce stress on the piping during normal operation and during a quench event.

What is a waveguide?

A waveguide is a specialized component installed where the quench vent passes through the MRI room's RF shield. It allows the vent system to penetrate the shield while maintaining the room's radio frequency integrity.

What is a roof termination?

A roof termination is the final discharge point of the quench vent system above the roof. It is designed to safely direct helium away from the building while protecting the vent system from weather and debris.

What is a sidewall termination?

A sidewall termination allows the helium exhaust to discharge safely through an exterior wall when a rooftop discharge is not practical or specified by the project design.

Why are bellows required?

Bellows accommodate thermal expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes within the vent system. They also help reduce stress on the MRI equipment and connected piping.

Can you manufacture custom components?

Yes. In addition to our standard product line, we manufacture custom components designed specifically for individual projects, including adapters, transitions, brackets, specialty flanges, and unique vent configurations.
